ππ£ Good Morning Poultry Enthusiasts! ππ
Today, let's talk about an important health issue that affects our chickens - Bumblefoot, also known as footpad dermatitis.
π Understanding Bumblefoot:
Bumblefoot is an inflammatory condition that targets the bottom of a chicken's foot, often presenting as a hard, pus-filled abscess covered by a brown to black scab. It's accompanied by swelling, heat, and reddening of the skin around the scab. As the condition worsens, it can cause considerable pain, making chickens reluctant to walk or even appear lame. π¦Άπ€
π Footpad Dermatitis Score:
On farms, the occurrence of such injuries is a critical factor in determining approved stocking densities. At processing plants, footpads are meticulously scored based on the presence and severity of lesions, a process that requires proper training. This scoring helps us understand whether the condition is manageable ('Ok'), needs attention ('Warning'), or requires urgent action to reduce stocking density ('Take urgent action'). πΎπ
